Endless landscapes. True silence. An abundance of nature. Extremadura has it all. It is one of the most authentically preserved regions in Europe, making it a wonderful destination for lovers of nature and culture, those who seek peace and quiet, and (nature) photographers — far removed from any form of mass tourism.
The region of Extremadura offers a level of tranquillity that is now rarely found anywhere else in Western Europe. Large areas have remained virtually untouched. Extremadura is almost the size of the Netherlands, yet has a population of just 1.1 million people.
As a result, it has enormous natural potential and offers the chance to see bird species that are rare or have disappeared elsewhere in Europe, including five species of eagle, as well as vultures and bustards. Extremadura is an absolute must for birdwatchers.
Culture lovers will also find much to enjoy in Extremadura, with visits to cities such as Mérida — often referred to as the ‘Rome of Spain’ — or the UNESCO World Heritage city of Cáceres.
The rolling, hilly landscape is vast and sparsely populated. Here you will find some of the last remaining large steppe landscapes of Western Europe, each with its own distinctive character and specialised birdlife. However, most of Extremadura is covered by holm oak and cork oak woodland, a landscape type known as dehesa.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, authenticity, culture and nature — and prefer to stay well away from mass tourism — then Extremadura is the ideal destination for you. Those who have visited once are rarely untouched by it. You will certainly experience this for yourself during a stay in one of our holiday bungalows.
